Glossary term

DNS

The system that turns a domain name into the address computers use to find it.

Abbreviation: DNSReviewed 15 August 2026

Definition

The system that translates a domain name, like example.com.au, into the technical address computers use to find the right website or email service.

In plain English

Think of it like a directory: you look up a name, and it points you to the right place. When a website or email suddenly can't be found, a DNS setting is sometimes the reason.

Why it matters

DNS settings are powerful and easy to get wrong, which is why changing them isn't something to do in a hurry or without understanding what will be affected.
