BSB

The number that identifies an Australian bank branch on a payment.

Abbreviation: BSBReviewed 15 August 2026

Definition

Bank State Branch number: a six-digit number that identifies the specific bank and branch behind an Australian bank account, used alongside the account number for a payment.

In plain English

You'll see it on an invoice or payment request next to the account number. A changed BSB or account number on an otherwise familiar-looking invoice is a common sign worth checking before paying.
