How to restart a modem or router without resetting it
Restart your internet equipment safely without pressing the reset button or wiping settings.
What you will learn
You'll know how to restart equipment safely and avoid a factory reset by mistake.
Before you continue
A reset button can remove settings. Do not press it unless instructed.
Stop and ask your provider or a trusted helper before pressing reset, changing router settings or disconnecting cables you cannot identify.
Restart and reset are different
Restarting means turning equipment off and back on. Resetting usually means returning it to factory settings.
For most first checks, you want a restart, not a reset.
Find the power switch or power plug
Use the power switch if the equipment has one. If it does not, turn it off at the power point or unplug the power cable.
Do not press a small reset button unless your provider has told you to.
Wait briefly
Leave the equipment off for a short time. Then turn it back on and wait a few minutes.
Internet equipment often takes time to reconnect. The lights may flash while it starts.
Check one device first
When the lights look settled, try one device near the router. If it works, test the device or room that had the problem.
If nothing works, check for an outage or contact your internet provider.
Record what changed
If restarting helps only for a short time, write that down. A problem that keeps returning may need provider help, replacement equipment or a closer look at the home setup.
What to expect
Your equipment has been restarted without deliberately resetting its stored settings.
